We purchased tickets online and received the code allowing entry without issue.  You must remove your shoes to enter the palace as is usual with many sites in Japan.  There are no photos allowed in the palace building.  There are the official rooms for reception of important guests and officials by the Emperor and his personal residence. Paintings on screens are beautiful.
