Canoeing and SUP Experience
The most famous activities you can experience in Kozawaga River are canoeing and SUP (Stand Up Paddle), a popular sport that allows you a new sense of fun. This time we have Instructor Ueda, who possesses more than 20 years of experience teaching in Kozawaga River and leading the “KAC: Kozagawa Adventure Club”. After all, it seems safety comes first. “Sometimes I get a bit fussy about safety” says Instructor Ueda.
Let’s start with canoeing. Everyone can fell the thrill of this activity by following kind Instructor Ueda’s simple guidance. Once you have learned the basics, off you go to the river!
Since you will be flowing in gentle waves, even complete beginners can get the hang of it very quickly.
Fast-learners can make a lot of progress after just 10 minutes rowing. Once you get used to it, you will be able to think about rowing backwards or changing direction. One of the advantages of canoeing is that you will improve so quickly. Canoeing is an active sport you can fully enjoy. It is a great experience to gently move along the river feeling at one with nature.
Next comes SUP. Since you will be moving whilst standing on a board, it is a bit more difficult than canoeing. After learning the basic stances, how to use the paddle, and how to recover in case of falling, you put it into practice. However the gentle river surface is different from the wavy sea. Usually it only takes about 10〜15 minutes to learn how to stand up.
Since keeping balance is essential, once you are able to stand up steadily the rest is pretty easy. The good thing about SUP is that it is not just propelling, you sit and talk while moving or even lie sprawled. Recently practicing yoga on the board to train balance has become extremely popular. If you get to master SUP, you will be able to ride strong waves like in surfing!
All staff are licensed guides who speak English. As there are some members who can also speak Korean and Chinese, if necessary, please confirm it with us in advance. On the riverside you can also experience many activities such as going shrimping and diving from the rocks on the river bank. Feel embraced by nature and enjoy Wakayama to the fullest!

Canoeing is available from May to October in Kozagawa Adventure Club. Wakayama is proud of Kozagawa's clear streams, and is well known for its large slab of rocks and bizarre stones. The river is so transparent that in good weather you will be able to clearly see the riverbed. The surface is so close from a canoe you will get the refreshing feeling of crossing the river!
