Whale Watching Experience
You can experience whale watching from Kushimoto Sue Port, on the southernmost point of Honshū (Japan’s largest island). It is a very rare spot where you can watch out for many whales as they go north with the Kuroshio current from mid-April until the end of October. Put on a life jacket, hop in the “Ichi Yoshi Maru” boat steered by Captain Tani and sail out on the vast Pacific Ocean. All aboard!
Unlike the Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean is relatively calm. Several minutes after leaving the port, in the blink of an eye the magnificent deep blue scenery stretch will completely lift your spirits. By the way, since it is known migrate north riding the Kuroshio Current for feeding and breeding, it is not rare to see a baby whale being carried by his mother. If you are lucky enough you might even spot a pod of whales with both babies and parents swimming together.
From April to June you can spot many species of whales, from large species of whales (15-20m) like the sperm and humpback whales, to the “small” baleen whale, also known in Japanese as the “bearded whale” Higekujira. You may also see ferocious killer whales. With the arrival of fall, rare pygmy sperm whales, groups of pilot whales, and dolphins are spotted. Occasionally large groups of swimming dolphins will welcome you!
With good weather, timing, and luck, you will be able to spot several species of whales with just one tour. If you are able to witness the spectacular tail lobbing and spout of a whale, you are definitely born under a lucky star. Experience the real pleasure of meeting the unexpected and enjoying magnificent sights!
Although the boat is fully equipped with a toilet facility, let’s get as ready as possible for the trip before embarking! Since you will spend more than 2 hours on board depending on the case, people that tend to get seasick please be careful. Needless to say, if you are pregnant or under the influence of alcohol please refrain from this whale watching tour. Furthermore, the activity may be cancelled due to bad weather. Since the tour is offered with prior reservation of 2 days in advance (〜20:00),it is important to make a reservation after checking the weather and sea conditions.
